JANET HIGGINS
The family story goes that when Janet Higgins was two, she sat in
the doctor’s office with pencil and paper and drew the waiting-
room television in 3-D. Later, she and her dad propped open an
art book and copied pictures. Her parents encouraged her all the
way to her BFA. Wine Garden & Tasting Room
She has always drawn and painted, and had plenty of time to do so
while living in Hong Kong because of her husband’s job. When they
returned to the states, she was ready for something new and took
a ceramics class. Instead of a pot, she created a figure and hasn’t
looked back.
At one point she sculpted a grasshopper playing a cello for the
Grants Pass growers market. When the city requested a sculpture,
she crafted a deer that sits near the entrance to town.
Janet has also done several bears for the Grants Pass BearFest, and
is well known for figures with long fingers and women with wild,
flaming red hair. Currently, she works in a combination of steel and
clay and includes mechanical movement—arms or heads move,
wings flap.
