When the child arrives at the age of fourteen it reaches
another milestone in its life, it's year of initiation. It becomes a
first year adult. This is the time it has been in preparation for,
for all of it's previous years. It is the time for the child to
resume responsibility for it's spiritual aspect and time for the
God parent to relinquish this responsibility. It is also the time
for the new adult to take responsibility for it's own physical
and mental requirements even though it may not be in a
position to financially afford them. In effect this person can
now begin to assume a role that will exercise their own power,
albeit with a reliance of it's parents to assist in providing for it
for sometime yet. This later situation is a product of social
norms and not necessarily to be used as any form of excuse
for the young adult to avoid responsibility for it's self and it's
self's actions. The caring adult should resist the temptation to
continue exercising the same control over their offspring and
gently encourage them to open to their own ideas, notions,
and inspirations, with responsibility. The parent, if asked for
advice should first enquire if their "child" has any ideas of
their own, and then add to them, or draw from their own
experience to help the fourteen year old get a larger
perspective of the situation they are seeking advice on. In this
way they will be better able to provide themselves with an
answer they can take responsibility for, and become
empowered. The questioner will always arrive at the answer
they need, nobody else can give it to them.
It might be said at this point that surely God will intervene
and ensure that the child's spirituality will be protected, let us
