INITIAL RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF BENIGN THYROID NODULES

BY RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION

AT HOAN MY SAIGON HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The majority of thyroid nodules are benign, some thyroid nodules

require treatment for reasons such as symptoms or aesthetics. The previous treatment
methods were surgery, laparoscopic surgery, hormone therapy, radioactive iodine…

however, these methods all have their limitations. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a

method that uses heat to destroy the thyroid nucleus. Recent studies have shown that RFA

is a safe and effective method of treating benign thyroid nodules.

Our study to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this technique was carried out at
Hoan My Saigon Hospital.

Objectives: Evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of reducing the volume of

benign thyroid tumors by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for patients treated at Hoan My

Saigon Hospital.

Subjects and methods: A descriptive study of a case series. The study was conducted
on 37 patients with benign thyroid nodules undergoing radiofrequency ablation at the

oncology department from May 2022 to September 2022.

Results: There were 37 cases of goiter ablated by radiofrequency waves, of which

there were 32 cases of single-nodular goiter, 5 cases of multinodular goiter. The average

RFA procedure time is 10 minutes (8 - 15 minutes). There were no cases where the
procedure had to be stopped and the patient was discharged a few hours after the treatment.

After the procedure, there were no complications. Tumor volume decreased the most in the
