The Essentials of Leadership
YOU FIRST - In ministry leadership, YOUR PERSONAL sanctification matters. You reproduce who
you are. You reproduce after your “kind”, so character is essential. Live a repentant life. Seek to
ensure the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are the constant gauges in your spiritual life. You will
make mistakes and there are times you will be wrong.
However, deal with it rather than deny it.
PRACTICE LOVE – John 13:35 says that they will know us by our love. Love does not make you
weak, it makes you an example. Love is crucial to every Christian. As a Christian leader, you should
be driven by the love of God in anything that you do.
CULTURE NOT CULT – Every ministry has a culture and generally it is established by the leader.
What the auxiliary believes, what it embraces, how it moves, and its attitude are usually formed
from the beliefs and values of leadership. Stay aligned with the Word of God. When the ministry’s
attention is no longer focused on God, but focused on an individual, you are bordering closely on
cultism. God must always be the focus of what you believe, the formation of your character, and
the guide by which directions are conceived.
PURPOSEFUL MOTIVATION – God’s purpose must be your priority. You should be able to
motivate others and stimulate the passion that is in them to achieve the will of God. In Nehemiah
2:17, “Nehemiah fearlessly encouraged the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem…”
CLEAR VISION - If you do nothing else as a leader, be clear.” Wise church leaders clarify, rectify,
and repeat the basics frequently. Without clarity, you will drift like a ship without a sail, being
tossed to and from. Pray on a continual basis for God's direction and blessings.
THE RIGHT WAY – Do not resist correction and as a leader and do not be afraid to correct others.
You should be aware, even if you correct in love, there is no guarantee that the team member
will not be offended. Jesus did not avoid correcting religious leaders just because of situations
that might be difficult. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable
for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…” Correct in love and
according to the Word of God.
BEGAT AND BUILD – As previously mentioned, you reproduce who you are. You should be an
imitation of Christ. In other words, Christ’s image should be on you and that is the image that you
should be reproducing on your team. A team cannot lead worship together if members of the
team do not support one another.
