                     Chalcone Aurone

Anthocyanidins, chalcones and aurones, lack the typical parent flavone structure.

The majority of flavonoids have free hydroxyl groups (phenolic groups), and these are
usually at the 3,4,7,3`,4` and 5` positions of the flavone ring system

Anthocyanidins and their glycosides (the anthocyanins) are the most important and
widespread group of coloring matters in plants.

These intensely colored water-soluble pigments are responsible for nearly all the pink, red,
violet, and blue colors in the petals, leaves and fruits of higher plants.

The color of anthocyanins and anthocyanidins is pH-dependant.

An example of anthocyanidins is the widely distributed compound, cyanidin.
