Investing in the SoMD community
MIL and the REPS sector are proud to serve as corporate sponsors for Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital and the Leadership Southern
Maryland professional development organization, both driving forces for good in the Southern Maryland (SoMD) community.
St. Mary’s Hospital
St. Mary’s Hospital (SMH) serves as a vital source of frontline
medical care for the SoMD area serving much of MIL’s Patuxent
River Naval Air Station support personnel. Our donation to SMH
is targeted for Surgical Capabilities Enhancement, a fund that will
help to bring a higher level of laparoscopic, minimally invasive,
and robotic surgery to SoMD. Dr. Dan Bauk recently performed
the first robot-assisted surgery on a patient’s knee with the help
of the Rosa robot; we are excitedly awaiting the arrival of the new
da Vinci robot soon. SMH has multiple surgeons who are eager
to schedule time with the endoscopic surgical tower – but SMH
currently only has one and could use more. These technologies
require a multitude of other equipment, supplies, storage, and
cleaning resources. To attract, recruit, and secure quality surgeons
to serve the SoMD community, SMH needs to provide this level of
advanced surgical technology for them to function and thrive.
By investing in MedStar SMH, MIL is also investing in the wellness of our employees as they directly benefit from improved hospital
capabilities, less post-surgery down-time, and less overall risk in the surgical process.
Leadership Southern Maryland
Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization with a mission to cultivate and nurture the
professional growth of local business leaders. Through programs
like Emerging Leaders Program (LEAP) and an intensive 9-month
long Executive Program, LSM members are provided opportunities
for enrichment through effective hands-on learning, regional
action, teamwork and cooperation, and local community service.
On September 16, 2021, MIL presented LSM with a $10,000
sponsorship donation designating the company as both a bronze
level Executive Program sponsor and the sole 2022 LEAP sponsor.
Our support of LSM and the Emerging Leaders Program goes
beyond financial sponsorship. We supported the participation
of an MIL employee during LEAP’s inaugural year and plan to
continue to send our rising stars through the program. Brady
Spatola, an engineer at MIL and 2020 LEAP graduate, knows first-
hand how the program can impact emerging leaders. “It definitely provided me with a wide-ranging perspective from local leaders. It
was like an open question and answer forum with tri-county leaders like the sheriffs and county commissioners. Being able to ask them
questions about their leadership styles and experiences was invaluable,” he said.
MIL already boasts several LSM Executive Program graduates among our ranks, for example Senior VP Harvil Jenkins (LSM’21). “LSM
exposes participants to what the region offers,” he explains. “Engaging with county and business leaders and developing relationships
with a diverse group people is a big deal and is a unique opportunity facilitated by the LSM Executive Program.”
LSM Executive Director Denise Foster emphasized how much the support of community partners like MIL means to the organization.
“LSM works hard to fulfill our mission to educate and inspire executive and emerging leaders and create meaningful connections
that lead to change in our community. The support of our sponsors is crucial to LSM’s efforts. Members of The MIL Corporation
have attended our programs, served on our board of directors and various committees, and supported LSM in countless ways. We
are thrilled to expand our partnership with them and welcome them as an official sponsor of both our Executive and Emerging
Leaders programs.”
