Internal control & fraud prevention training
MIL VP John Hooley attended a recent and fully virtual training event sponsored by the Association of
Government Accountants (AGA) that spotlighted internal control and fraud prevention in the financial
management and accounting fields. Conducted online on September 21–22, the symposium featured
presentations by three industry experts: Traci Brown, an expert in deception detection; Brett Johnson,
a specialist in cybersecurity and identity theft; and Former DHS Assistant Secretary Julliette Kayyem, a
recognized expert on national security and member of the faculty at Harvard.
In Ms. Brown’s session, provocatively titled “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire,” she discussed a 9-Point Fraud
Spotting System she claims can “separate lies from the truth and avoid blindly stepping into a situation that
could destroy your business or reputation.”
Opening the second day of sessions, Ms. Kayyem’s presentation, “Terrorism, Cyberattacks & Pandemics:
Managing Risks in a Borderless World,” discussed the history of the Department of Homeland Security as
well as the Nation’s most pressing security threats and ways in which we can keep our local communities
safer.
Mr. Johnson concluded the Fraud ’21 conference with a discussion about his 20-year criminal history.
During a session he called “Sorting Fact from Fiction: Lessons Learned from My Life of Crime,” Mr.
Johnson talked about persistent cybersecurity myths, providing examples of online criminal activities
and sharing valuable advice on combating online crime by securing our identities, businesses, and digital
transactions.
