John Roland, MIL VP, receives accolades for exemplary service at the AIT

The American Institute of Taiwan (AIT) is the de facto Embassy of the United States of America in
Taiwan and is dependent on a complex billing process for $60 million dollars annually, involving 16
U.S. Government departments and agencies. When the Washington branch of the AIT lost critical
accounting capabilities due to vacancies within weeks of one another, MIL FAS VP John Roland
quickly stepped up to support. He mastered their unique hybrid accounting procedures, performing
the duties usually assigned to two people!
AIT’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ambassador (ret) James F. Moriarty expressed his
gratitude for John’s dedication and many contributions from November 2018 to September 2020
stating, “His remarkable range of gifts and tireless professional effort underlines MIL’s own sacrifice
in allowing us to retain the services of one of your Vice-Presidents for nearly two years. His range of
accomplishments while with us was extraordinary.”
It is an understatement to say that John played a key role in MIL’s work at the AIT. In addition to preparing AIT for a successful audit,
        he made several noteworthy accomplishments: instituted a greatly simplified method for calculating indirect administrative costs;
raised AIT' s budget executive by several million dollars; freed up a substantial sum of the Department of State's valuable security funds
for its use worldwide; implemented a more capable payroll system for the Washington office; and devised an investment strategy that
added hundreds of thousands of dollars to the AIT coffers.
John’s accomplishments did not end there. During his service to the AIT, he was a remarkable leader and mentor. John not only trained
other AIT accountants in technical and financial matters, he also offered extraordinary guidance to the AIT team in core management
skills and peaceful conflict resolution. “With this stellar record, the reputation of John Roland and MIL with the American Institute in
Taiwan stands very high,” said Ambassador Moriarty.
Please join us in congratulating John for his exemplary service at the AIT!
