• Fill your phone with apps, widgets, and notifications to receive updates from local and state emergency
agencies including evacuation orders. Remember that some notifications are opt-in, so check to make sure
you are set to receive any data disseminated for your local area. FEMA recommends starting by opting into
its basic alerts by texting the following to 43362: Text “PREPARE” for tips on being prepared, “SHELTER”
and a zip code after a disaster to find local shelter options, and “LIST” to get more options
• Have alternatives for your usual communication channels in the event of widespread power or cellular

Introducing Namecoach
Centuries ago, teacher and philosopher Kong Fuzi (aka Confucius) noted that “The beginning
of wisdom is to call things by their proper name.” To make sure we’re all able to call things, and
more specifically people, by their proper name, MIL is introducing the use of Namecoach as a
way to learn the correct pronunciation of unfamiliar names.
According to InsightGlobal’s Brita Long, “A name is central to someone’s identity. Names can
connect us to our family, our ethnicity, our culture, our self-image, and sometimes, even our
choices. When you correctly say someone’s name, you respect their identity. In the workplace, taking the time to
learn a colleague’s name goes beyond respect—it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).”
To learn more, visit Namecoach. And to learn how to add Namecoach to your electronic communications/
Outlook signature, see IT-202b Name Coach Email Signature Instructions.docx.
