BACK TO FRANCIS FOY:

The idea that a man named FRANCIS FOY was the first FOY in our line to
come to America seems to have come from an association of the name FRANCIS
as being the father of THOMAS FOY in Maryland records. THOMAS FOY is
thought by most FOY researchers to be one of the first FOYs of our line. That
is, most researchers trace our ancestry back to a THOMAS FOY and all
indications are that the father of that THOMAS FOY was probably a man
named FRANCIS. However, to date, no specific records have been located to
               prove that belief.

               THE AHS DOCUMENT AGAIN.

The earliest document I have personally seen which links the name FRANCIS
to our line of FOYs is the AHS document discussed in an earlier chapter. That

document begins with the following: {I HAVE ADDED ITALICS AND
               UNDERLINING FOR EMPHASIS PURPOSES}

The FOY family of North Carolina, though according to traditions still
extant, descended from early Huguenot settlers of the Carolinas, may
possibly have have had its origin in northeastern Maryland. The earliest
known Maryland record of any FOY dates back to the 1680's . The Maryland
Assembly, during its October-November, 1682 session ordered “To ffrancis
ffoye Ten pds of Tob” (to Francis FOYE ten pounds of tobacco) ; tobacco
then being commonaly used as currency.

Another record of a FRANCIS FOY is as follows:

“Account of FRANCIS FOY executor of the last will and testament of
DANIEL JOHNSON, late of Baltimore County, deceased, October 23, 1836,
in which he charges said estate with various summs paid out.”

According to a tradition current among the North Carolina FOYs, JAMES,
JOHN and FREDERICK FOY were the tree original brothers landing in this
country from France, and the mother of these three, whose surname was
Miles, never came to America. Also, according to tradition, one of the
