Pharmacodynamic Parameters
A typical plot (rectilinear paper) of plasma concentration versus time following the
administration of a drug by an extravascular route.
1. Minimum effective concentration “MEC”
The minimum concentration of drug in plasma required to produce the desired
therapeutic effect.
MEC reflects the minimum concentration of drug needed at the receptors to
produce the desired pharmacologic effect.
The concentration below MEC is regarded as a sub-therapeutic concentration.
2. Maximum safe concentration “MSC”
It is also known as the minimum toxic concentration (MTC).
It is the concentration of a drug in plasma beyond which side effects will result.
Concentration above the MSC is regarded to be at a toxic level.
