A typical plot (rectilinear paper) of plasma concentration versus time following the

administration of a drug by an extravascular route.

                      1. Minimum effective concentration “MEC”

 The minimum concentration of drug in plasma required to produce the desired
                         therapeutic effect.

 MEC reflects the minimum concentration of drug needed at the receptors to

                         produce the desired pharmacologic effect.

 The concentration below MEC is regarded as a sub-therapeutic concentration.

                      2. Maximum safe concentration “MSC”

 It is also known as the minimum toxic concentration (MTC).

 It is the concentration of a drug in plasma beyond which side effects will result.

 Concentration above the MSC is regarded to be at a toxic level.
