会話 3 : Sutures and Risk of Infection
The doctor explains after-care methods.
医師がアフターケアの方法を説明します。
Doctor : Ms. Shah, we have given your mother an antibiotic and a tetanus injection. How is she
feeling?
Ms. Shah : Fine
Doctor : We would like to close the wound. The wound is not wide enough to require suture, but...
Ms. Shah : Excuse me, suture? … Oh yes, stitches.
9
Doctor : Yes. Stitches. The wound will not require stitches or staples or skin adhesives .
Ms. Shah : I think we would like to have some skin adhesives for the area of the cut.
Doctor : Actually, although we have cleaned the wound, it may still have some bacteria. If there is
10
any bacteria, then closing bacteria into a wound by stitching can increase the risk of infection .
Also narrow but deep wounds like this one usually heal faster when not stitched.
Ms. Shah : I see.
Doctor : We are going to apply bandaging to the cut. The nurse will show you how to do this.
Ms. Shah : Yes.
Doctor : After that, I think you can return home. Do you have a local doctor that you usually go to
with external medical issues?
Ms. Shah : External medical issues?
11
Doctor : Yes. We divide the practice of medicine into two separate fields here. Internal medicine
12
and external medicine . The external medical doctors generally perform surgeries like this one. You
should visit the Internal medical clinics if you have any internal physical issues like a cold or stomach-
ache.
Ms. Shah : I see. We will visit an external specialist. Yes?
Doctor : Yes. That is right. I will write a note to explain to your doctor explaining your condition if
you would prefer.
Ms. Shah : Yes. Thank you very much.
Doctor : Please make sure to change the bandages daily, or whenever they get wet.
Ms. Shah : OK. Thank you very much doctor.
