The handles bear a painted inscription reading:
‘Made by Zhang Heyan’; and the names of disciples
Zhang Quan, Yang Qualin, and of secondary
disciples, Fan Changshan and Chang Yanfeng.

A RARE DOCUMENTARY FAHUA FIGURE OF
AN OFFICIAL
Dated to the 39th year of the Jiajing reign,
corresponding to 1560 and of the period
The dignitary modelled seated wearing an official
cap, both hands held before the chest, clad in loose
flowing robes, seated on a wide throne with foot
stool, the reverse with the name of the maker, ‘Mr
Qiao, craftsman of the town of Yangchen’, 32.5cm
(12 3/4in) high; together with an inscribed Fahua
glazed figure of Zhenwu, a tortoise and snake by his
feet, late Ming dynasty, 28cm (11in) high. (2).

The inscription on the reverse of the figure of
Zhenwu may be translated as ‘This county’s
[Zezhou] virtuous patron Liang Zhangtong restored
the Five Dragon Temple...in Yangcheng county,
Tongluo temple, the artisan Qiao family has
transcribed the same stele. [Made by] Qiao Shigui.’
The Qiao family were artisans spanning several
generations in Yangcheng County, Shanxi Province.
An architectural fitting of Guanyin in a grotto, dated
1573 with an inscription naming Qiao Yongxin
and his son Qiao Hui as glazers, is illustrated
by J.Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British
Museum, London, 2001, pp.529-531.
