A rare lobed rectangular mother-of-pearl-inlaid box, cover and
tray
17th century
The lobed cover carved and densely inlaid with a scene of a dignitary in
a pavilion with two attendants observing the approach of a visitor whilst
a lady and her two maidservants watch from the upper balcony and
another dignitary strolls in the adjacent garden against a background
of wutong and pine trees beside a river, the sides of the box and cover
delicately inlaid with a geometric pattern of interlocking circles, the
interior lacquered red with an inlaid leafy peony branch on the inside
cover and containing a tray inlaid with twelve Daoist symbols on the
black exterior enclosing a separate red lacquered panel inlaid with six
scattered insects.
