A pair of bronze Buddhist lions

254 | Bonhams The guardian beasts each cast with mouths open in a roar beneath
fiercely glaring eyes and extravagantly curling brows and mane,
crouching with powerful body and haunches on an integal raised
platform cast with embroidered drapery, one with its right foreleg
supported on a tasselled ball and the other with left foreleg resting on
a playful cub.
Each 23.5cm (9¼in) high (2).

A bronze ‘Buddhist lion’ joss-stick holder
17th century
Finely cast as a crouching Buddhistic lion with bulging eyes and a
broad open mouth baring fangs, teeth and tongue, the mane detailed
with swirling curls with a tied ribbon on its back, the foreleg and
hind leg raised to scratch its head and back, atop a lobed lozenge-
shaped plinth.
