A bronze figure of a ‘luohan and elephant’
incense burner and cover
17th century
The luohan cast as a detachable cover, wearing a loose robe with
two pierced cloud-shaped holes at the back to allow the incense to
drift, the robe incised with cranes and cloud scrolls, the figure holding
a scroll and sitting on the back of a sturdy caparisoned elephant with
a long pointed tail, turning the head to its left, the saddlecloth with
three stylised shou characters.
