A BLUE AND WHITE ‘LITERARY SAGES’ BOWL
Kangxi period
The rounded sides rising to an everted rim, the exterior painted in
rich cobalt-blue with ‘The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’ and
their attendants engaged in literary pursuits in a rocky landscape,
the floor painted with a depiction of poet Li Bai asleep against a wine
jar, beneath a honeycomb diaper and peach panel band encircling
the inner rim, the base marked with a square ‘lattice’ mark within a
double circle.

COVER
Kangxi period
Of baluster form, painted around the exterior in cobalt-blue tones
with groups of boys engaged in leisurely activities in a garden setting,
all below a tubular neck encircled by a plum blossom on cracked ice
band and painted with ribbon-tied precious objects, the base with
an artemisia leaf within a double-circle, the associated cover similarly
decorated.
