TWO INSCRIBED ‘LINGBI’ SCHOLAR’S
ROCKS
The first resembling a mountain range, the
underside with relief inscription reading
Qianlong shier nian Qianlong yuwan Shiyi
Lang huaigu shi (Qianlong twelfth year,
Imperial plaything for Qianlong, Eleventh
Fellow’s reminiscence of an ancient stone),
with inscriptions on the sides reading
Jiangshi Shanren cang shi (stone collection
of Jiangshi Shanren), Shihan renwu nian zhi
(made in the renwu year by Shihan), and
yin jiang yuan shan ruo shui zhi ping yuan
(diversion from the mountains to the far away
waters); the other oriented vertically with
craggy surface, hollows and a overhang,
with a relief inscription reading Shiyi Lang
renwu Jiangshi Shanren cang Shihan zhi shi 8120
(Eleventh fellow, renwu year, collection of
Jiangshi Shanren, made by Shihan).

A rock with an inscription in a similar style
mentioning Jiangshi Shanren, and dated
to 1877 was sold at Sotheby’s London, 11
November 2015, lot 161.

TWO GRAY ‘LINGBI’ SCHOLAR’S ROCKS
The first of ‘L’ shape, the vertical section
enhanced with carved hollows and ending
in a hook, the surfaces lightly carved to
enhance the curves; the second of irregular
shape, with a perforation near the base,
the surface crossed with beige veins, wood
stand.
