FIVE ARCHAISTIC JADE ‘CICADA’ ORNAMENTS
Late Qing Dynasty
Each drilled with a channel at the mouth for stringing, one of oval form
with large protruding eyes, the reddish-brown stone with degraded
surface and stained black in areas; one simply carved in stylized form,
the underside carved in shallow relief with an animal’s head above four
pairs of feet, the beige stone mottled and stained black in areas; one
of flattened form and incised with stylized details to depict the wings
and body, the light celadon stone stained black on one side; one of
elongated form and with a small head, the incised lines depicting
wings and body, the pale stone stained brown in areas; one carved in
low relief, the stone mottled and stained orange-brown. (5)

130 SIX ARCHAISTIC JADE AND HARDSTONE CARVINGS
Late Qing Dynasty
The mythical beast of flatten form decorated with ‘comma’ scroll
designs with long mane on the back, the pale stone stained brown in
areas; the axe of rectangular shape perforated at one end, decorated
with a chi dragon between line borders, the reverse with ruyi scrolls,
the mottled stone stained black; the blade-shaped plaque of
rectangular shape, the cutting edge with rounded sides, the other end
decorated with a recumbent mythical beast, the stone stained brown;
the thumb ring carved with a chi dragon in relief, the olive green stone
stained black in areas; the smaller thumb ring with thick walls carved
with a chi dragon in relief, the gray stone mottled brown and stained
black in areas; the short cylinder with thick walls carved with a chi
dragon in high relief, the olive green stone stained brown in areas. (6)

The short jade cylinder with chi dragon in high relief compares very
closely to the jade ring donated to the British Museum by James Hilton
in 1930, illustrated on the museum’s website, registration number
1930.1217.27, attributed as Qing dynasty.
