A NEOLITHIC PAINTED POTTERY JAR
Majiayao culture, Banshan type, Gansu province
The globular body tapers down to small flat foot, lively painted in black
and red on the upper register with alternating vertical ‘cowry’ and ‘fishnet’
panels, a band of concentric circles at the base of the neck below bands
of ‘fishnet’ and triangular patterns, a pair of loop handles applied at the
waist and a pair of small ‘ear’ handles flanking the straight neck.

This pottery jar exemplifies the distinctive characteristics of the Majiayao
culture, a notable Neolithic civilization situated predominantly in the
upper Yellow River region, China. Renowned for its painted potteries,
the Majiayao culture holds historical significance as it marks the initial
widespread settlement of agricultural communities in the Upper Yellow
River region.

A LARGE NEOLITHIC PAINTED POTTERY SHALLOW BOWL
Majiayao culture, Yangshao phase
Freely painted in black swirls and circles roughly divided in three registers,
the rolled rim decorated with similar design and ‘fishnet’ pattern, the
exterior decorated with ‘wave’ patterns, the beige pottery burnished
smooth with light earth encrustations.
