164 A BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER

The censer has a compressed body raised
on three conical supports and a pair of
open handles that sweep outward from the
rim. The base is cast with a three-character
inscription, qin shu lu.

The mark, qin shu lu, which may be translated
as ‘Companion of qin and books’, is the art name
of Wu Bang Zuo, a Xuande period court oficial
in charge of the making of bronze censers. The
same mark is on two bronze tripod censers
illustrated in Jin yu qing yan: Yang Bingzhen xian
sheng zhen cang Ming Qing tong lu, National
Museum of History, Taipei, 1996, p. 121, nos. 18
and 19.

A LARGE BRONZE ‘PHOENIX TAIL’
SQUARE VASE
17TH-18TH CENTURY
The square-form vase is decorated on each
side of the mid-section with ruyi designs,
which are repeated around the lower section,
all between a lotus-lappet border and a
band of bosses below. The trumpet neck
is decorated on each side with a fowering
meander and is fanked by a pair of ruyi-
shaped handles. The base is cast with an
apocryphal Xuande six-character mark
within a square.
