            vessels  with  sprays   of  flowers,  such   as  the  botmi,  kikii,
            and  saku-ra, painted  in colours and   gold, whilst upon others
            are  found   year-periods  and    symbolical  ornaments,    copied
            from  Chinese   wares, and,  in exceptional  cases, modifications
            of  the Kiku   crest  of  the Mikado.     The mark given below
            is copied from one of the choicest specimens in the Dresden
            Collection.

                The use of Chinese year-periods upon Japanese porcelain
           appears   to have been    general from    the  earlier days  of  its
           manufacture,    for numerous instances     are to be found in the
            Dresden Collection.    The following mark, of the Tch’ing-hoa
