4                 MARKS AND SEALS ON POTTERY.             —

                      period,  1465-1487   a.d.,  is  copied   from   a  dish   in   that
                      collection  bearing    a   representation   of   the  baptism    of
                      Christ,  a  subject which   could  only have been used      subse-
                      quently to the introduction of Christianity into Japan in 1549.

                       Made in the year of Seika, dtirhig the dynasty of Dai Ming, 1465-1487 A .D. A forgery of the Chinese mark of
                                                the TchHng-hoa period.

                      Forged Chinese marks are also frequently used by the modern
                      Hizen    potters,  and    large   quantities   of   imitation  Old
                      Japan   have been    recently  received  in  Europe,  bearing   the
                      following marks    or  others  of a  similar character  :





















                            DAI MING, KASEI, NEN SEI.        DAI THSING, KENRIU, NEN SEI.
                              Made in the year of Kasei,        Made in the year of Kenriu,
                        during the dynasty of Dai Ming, i$22-i$66 A.D.  during the dyiiasty of Dai Thsing, 1736-1795 A.D.
                      ^     ofthe Chinese mark of the Kia-tsin^ period.  A forgery of the Chinese mark of the Khien-long period.
