                                  The mark at the foot of the first inscription is the painter’s seal.

                       The    sometsuke   porcelain,  ware    decorated   with   blue
                   under the   glaze, made    at  Seto  in  the  province  of  Owari,
                   the manufacture    of which    dates from   the  earlier  years  of
                   the  present  century, has   nearly   always   the name     of the
                   maker painted upon     it,  together with   the  characters  signi-

                   fying  Seto, Japan,   in  the  fashion shown   in  the  first mark
                   on  the following page.
                       In some instances     fuller information than   this  is given

                   is  copied  from  a  large  plaque   of  sometsuke  porcelain,   im
                  the Bowes Collection, which      is decorated with   a  representa-
