               The   names    of  the  makers   do   not  appear upon any but
               comparatively modern     Hizen   work,   and   it would probably
               be  correct   to  assume   that  this plan  of marking    has   not
               been  followed more than      fifty  years  it  is,  however,  very
                                                        ;
               generally pursued    at the   present  time.    The   first  of  the
               two marks     given below   is taken from    a good specimen of
               Nagasaki    porcelain  decorated   in  colours,  and   the  second
               from an example      of  fine  late  period  blue and  white.

               Marks    are  very  seldom used    in  the province   of Satsuma,
               but  occasionally   the maker impresses     or paints   his  signa-
               ture, and   in  rare instances  the  crest  or  the name    of  the
               Prince  appears.
