Upon the finest examples of the early ware decorated with
red and gold, the mark is generally written in gold upon a
panel of red, but occasionally the characters are painted in
red without the introduction of gold.

KUTANI.
Other examples of early date and great excellence show
the characters in combination with the name of the maker,
in the following manner :
K.UTANI, HOK.UHO.
The seal is the iiiaker's mark.
The same plan was followed by the makers of the finest
middle period ware.
