6                 MARKS AND SEALS ON POTTERY.
                       In the province of Kaga painted marks are almost inva-
                  riably  used    it  is seldom  that  the word    Kutani   does  not
                               ;
                  appear,  either  alone  or  in combination    with   the name    of
                  the  potter and   other information.     Two    representations  of
                  the word Kutani, which      is the name of the district in which
                  the   earliest  factories  were  established,  are   given  as  the
                  frontispiece  of this Work.
                       The more     ancient examples of the ware bear the word
                   Kutani alone, as shown below        this mark   is  copied from  a
                                                     ;
                   specimen   dating from about     1650  a.d., and belongs    to the
                  period  before  gold was used     in the decoration of the ware.
