AN UNUSUAL MOTTLED DARK BROWN
AND BUFF JADE RHYTON
SONG-MING DYNASTY, 12TH-16TH CENTURY
The well-hollowed vessel, of irregular
outline, is fnely carved at the bottom with
a phoenix head with small hooked beak,
and around the sides with chilong slithering
in and out of the clouds that envelope the
body. The handle is formed by the slender,
faceted body of a two-headed mythical beast
grasping the sides of the cup. The stone
shades from white to opaque buff and dark
reddish-brown color.
