A THANGKA DEPICTING BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI
AND A THANGKA DEPICTING AKSHOBYA
TIBET, LATE 18TH CENTURY
The thangka depicting Buddha Shakyamuni depicts the fgure seated
in vajrasana on a lotus dais and surrounded by four groups of lamas,
Buddha fgures, arhats and protective deities and the lower section
shows the four lokapalas fanking pavilions and bodhisattvas the
central ratna. The thangka depicting Akshobya depicts the deity seated
in vajrasana on a lotus dais placed on a throne painted with elephant
emblems. He is surrounded by Maitreya, Syamatara, Vajradha, various
lamas, Sadaksharilokeshvara, Manjusri and Vajrapani. They both have
a brocade mounting.
