JINGWEI TANG ZHI MARKS IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN DOUBLE From the collection of an English gentleman of title. Acquired prior to the
SQUARES, 19TH CENTURY 1950s and then by descent within the family.
Each bowl is covered in an even silky celadon glaze, with the rims highlighted The hall mark, Jingwei tang zhi, which can be translated as ‘Made for the Hall
in brown. of Reverent Awe’, is found on blue-glazed as well as celadon-glazed vessels
5¬ in. (14.3 cm.) diam. with brown-dressed rims, of various shapes and sizes.
(2) See Ming Wilson, Rare Marks on Chinese Porcelain, London, 1998, p. 114,
where the author references a celadon-glazed bowl with this mark, noting
£3,000-5,000 $4,400-7,200 that Jingwei Tang was the studio name of Li Hu, alias Duanren, style name
€3,800-6,300 Zhucun, a native of Cixi, but that it has also “been suggested that porcelains
bearing the Jingwei Tang mark once belonged to the Manchu high oficial
Agedunbu.” Pieces bearing this mark appear to have been made during
the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods, as well as the Jiaqing and Daoguang
periods, perhaps indicating that the hall was “in use for several generations.”
