AN AGATE ‘COCKEREL’ SNUFF BOTTLE
18TH-19TH CENTURY
The bottle is carved in high relief with a cockerel standing on rocks beside a
fowering branch of cockscomb, representing the rebus, guanshang jiguan,
which may be translated as ‘may you rise in rank again and again’. Its eye
and feathers are fnely detailed. The stone is of an attractive, even honey and
caramel tone.

THREE GLASS OVERLAY SNUFF BOTTLES
19TH CENTURY
The group comprises: a snowfake-ground snuf bottle carved in red overlay with a tree shrew amongst fruiting
vines; another black overlay on pink-ground bottle is carved with leaping fsh above waves between mask and ring
handles; a third six-colour glass overlay bottle is carved on the white ground with bats in fight above pomegranate
and precious objects between butterfy handles.
