                                                                                                                                             MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)

                                                                                                                                             The fgure represents Vaisravana, the Guardian King of the North, holding
                                                                                                                                             a stupa in his raised left hand. He wears elaborate armour with a celestial
                                                                                                                                             scarf billowing above his shoulder and trailing down his sides. His face wears
                                                                                                                                             a wrathful expression below the openworked crown and topknot. There are
                                                                                                                                             traces of lacquer.

                                                                                                                                             The interior of each dish is delicately enamelled with an elegant lady seated

                                                                                                                                             on a garden stool by a table, with two young boys standing beside her. The

                                                                                                                                             underside is decorated with a shou-character roundel surrounded by fve bats,

                                                                                                                                             enclosed within a foral border with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang.
