    A LARGE CLOISONNE ENAMEL
    TRIPOD CENSER AND COVER

      QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

    The censer is supported on three gilt
    elephant-head feet, each with long tusks
    and bejewelled harnesses, applied on
    two sides with a further pair of elephant-
    heads. The upturned bell-shaped body
    is decorated with lotus scrolls with large
    blooms separated by four shou characters,
    below a band of hanging plantain leaves
    enclosing pairs of chilong. The cover is
    decorated with three large ruyi-shaped
    panels, each enclosing central shou
    character surrounded by scrolling lotus,
    all surrounded by finely and intricately
    cast gilt openwork. The finial is formed
    as a recumbent elephant
    carrying a globular censer
    on its back.
