Selections & Free Transform: Creating Mirror-Like Reflections
Nothing kills a shot like choppy water. I include it in my “Seven Deadly Sins of Landscape Photography” talk, and it’s pretty deadly for travel shots, as
well. Here’s a quick technique that gives you nice, still water, with a glassy reflection. You can end the technique right there, or you can take it a couple of
steps further and bring a little more realism into the look. The choice is yours (and it does depend on the image. Sometimes the straight-up mirror look is
best).
Step One:
We’ll start by opening the image in Photoshop. In this case, we have a photo from Norway’s Lofoten Islands and the water is kinda choppy. Get the
Rectangular Marquee tool (M) from the Toolbar and make a selection from the top of the water (where the land meets the water at the seawall) and go all
the way up to the top of the image (as shown here). Now, press Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J) to copy that selected buildings-and-sky area up onto its own
separate layer.
