Tip: Hiding the Placeholder Text
If you’d rather not have that placeholder text added when you click with the Horizontal Type tool, just go to Photoshop’s Preferences under the Photoshop
(PC: Edit) menu. In the dialog, click on Type on the left, then turn off the Fill New Type Layers with Placeholder Text checkbox, in the Type Options
section.
Step Eight:
Lastly, it’s not just blank layers that have an Opacity adjustment—it’s any layer (besides the Background layer, of course, because there’s nothing below it
to see through to). So, let’s make our type less obtrusive by lowering the opacity of the Land of the Midnight Sun layer to 60%, then in the Layers panel,
click on the Norway layer and lower its Opacity amount to 50% (as shown here). You’ll probably wind up using the layer Opacity setting quite a bit in
Photoshop, so I wanted to make sure you knew what it was and how to use it, as well as what we use blank layers for. This is handy stuff to know up front.
