6 — OUR PLAN
THE GOLF COURSE
The Centre will be built within the bounds of the existing Wallsend golf course and will
also provide club house facilities for the Wallsend Golf Club in place of its current club
house which will be demolished. The 18 hole course will be remodeled by Dave Thomas
Ltd to accommodate the Centre and to meet the changing demands of modern golf. The
layout for the new course with the Centre in place is shown below. The intention is that
it should become, and remain, the pre-eminent golf course in the North Tyneside area
with the intent of increasing substantially the 17,000 rounds per annum currently played.
The redesign and new format of the course is key to delivering the forecasted growth in
course revenue. The reconfigured course offers 6, 12 and 18 hole game options. There’s
actually nothing new in 12 hole courses with several well established and successful
clubs based at them, including the famous Shishkine Golf Club on the Isle of Arran which
boasts one of the country’s most attractive courses.
Back in 2007, the famous Jack Nicklaus, argued for the 12 hole game to become the
standard, and again in 2011 there are several advantages to the shorter game. Foremost
of these is that we all lead busier lives and can’t afford the half day at least required for
18 holes.
The 2019 KPMG Golf Participation Report for Europe showed that England, which has
the largest number of registered golfers in Europe, lost 10,688, or 1.63%, of its registered
players between 2017 and 2018 with the numbers falling from 655,839 to 645,151.
