Answer Key to Summative Assessment
(see Rubrics on page 87)
the answer Key offers possible answers to the Summative assessment questions. Students’ answers
will vary. Remember to accept any answer that the student can justify from the text.
Answers might include:
1. Ben Ross, a high school history teacher, started The Wave.
2. The Wave was a history class experiment designed to help his students understand Nazism and why the
German people did not resist it. Ben set up a movement similar to Nazism, called The Wave, for students to
experience its effects on human behavior.
3. The climax of the story is the incident where David pushed Laurie and hurt her. This made David realize how
dangerous The Wave was and that Laurie was actually right to be against it. (Accept other justified responses,
such as the final rally.)
4. a. Comparing and contrasting
b. Students’ answers will vary. They should choose a character and compare / contrast the person’s appearance,
behavior, and so on, before and after experiencing The Wave. A graphic organizer is optional.
c. The HOTS is Comparing and contrasting. The explanation should bring out the features of this HOTS and why
it is the right one to use.
5. a. Laurie is the character who is against The Wave from the very beginning, although David joins her later on.
She would probably have joined the Edelweiss Pirates if she had been living in Germany.
b. This information shows us that in every situation there are people who are not ‘swept along’ by the majority,
who know how to think for themselves and that it is not surprising that as exciting and positive as The Wave
seemed to be, there were people who could recognize its dangers.
