5. In his article: Opposition and Resistance in Nazi Germany, (Cambridge University
Press, 2001) Frank McDonough describes groups of youngsters (usually boys) between
the ages of 12 –18 who called themselves the edelweiss Pirates. Groups of them sprang
up in different German towns during the 1930s. they did not want to become part
of the hitler Youth and chose to dress differently and make fun of Nazism. they were
extremely brave as they continued to do this even during the war, when they knew
they could be sent to prison or even killed.
