42. The special edition of The Grapevine was very popular because The Wave was the biggest issue in the school and
             everyone was involved.
            43. The word ‘enemy’ was painted in red letters on Laurie’s locker door.
            44. Laurie heard footsteps behind her and the lights at the far end of the hall went out. She ran because she thought
someone was following her to do her harm.
            45. David tried to convince Laurie to stop writing and speaking against The Wave and to rejoin the movement. He
waited on her route home to speak to her. Laurie wasn’t interested and started to walk away. David grabbed her
first by one arm and then by both and finally threw her down on the grass.
            46. David suddenly realized he had been denying that The Wave could hurt anyone and now he had hurt Laurie.
He felt almost as if he were coming out of a trance. He knew then that The Wave was wrong.
            47. Christy asked Ben to end The Wave the next day. She told him if he did not do so, then Principal Owens would,
and his experiment would be a failure. He would be risking his reputation as a teacher and she would also be
             badly affected.
            48. At first Ben argued against Christy and resented her telling him what to do (… he had to admit … he had enjoyed
those fleeting moments of power), but when he thought about it he realized she was right and told her so. At first he
was worried that he didn’t know how to end The Wave but then he thought of an idea he hoped would work.
            49. David and Laurie came to see Ben to tell him that The Wave had gone too far. It had taken over and people
were scared to say anything against it. People were also afraid of what would happen to them if they didn’t go
             along with The Wave.

          Answers might include:
            50. Principal Owens told Ben he didn’t like the experiment because teachers and parents were complaining. Ben
admitted that The Wave had gone too far and he had made a mistake. A history class is not a science lab. You can’t
experiment with human beings. Ben asked the principal for the rest of the day to end it.

            51. He announced that there would be a rally in the auditorium at five o’ clock that day for Wave members only.
            52. Mr. Ross explained that The Wave was not just a classroom experiment but that teachers all across the country
had been recruiting and training a youth brigade to show the rest of the nation how to achieve a better society. Laurie
and David challenged Mr. Ross and tried to resist and speak to the class but he stopped them and took them to
             the Principal’s office.

            53. Laurie realized why other Germans had ignored what the Nazis were doing and pretended they didn’t know. It
was fear and forced compliance and it could happen again.
