28. Ben Ross was amazed that The Wave had spread so far. He would have felt quite relieved if the principal told
him to stop the experiment. But he was worried that ending The Wave would have a bad effect on Robert
Billings, and the other students would be cheated out of the outcome. Even though Ben knew The Wave was a
classroom experiment, he would regret losing the experience of leading them to the end.
29. Principal Owens was concerned that the school was in a tizzy. The Wave was unusual. Were the students
falling behind with their work? There were students outside of the history class that were also involved. The
mottos and saluting also bothered him. The Wave seemed too open-ended. The students were young and
impressionable and it could go too far. An angry parade of parents could start complaining. I can’t say that I’m
crazy about this … but you’ve never given me cause to doubt you before.
Ben hoped that it was a good tizzy and reassured the principal that he had heard nothing to the contrary.
The students were ahead in their work, there had been no complaints from teachers of other students, the
mottos and saluting were just part of the game and as the leader the students followed, he would not let the
experiment go too far: I assure you it can’t get out of hand. Ben promised the principal he would keep a watchful
eye on things. Once again, Owens had no cause to doubt him.
