32. Laurie was uncertain about going to the rally because she felt that something was wrong with The Wave and
it was scary. Everyone was becoming crazy and the Wave was taking over everything. She told David she had
decided not to go because she was a leader in the school and she wanted to leave other students free to make
up their own minds.
33. Alex also felt The Wave was militaristic (… the troops … Pretty soon they’re gonna have to change the name of
this school to Fort Gordon High). He thought the experiment was ridiculous and was ready to kung-fu them into
chopped suey if anyone tried to make him join. His reaction was humorous, as he had a reputation for being the
class clown.
34. Laurie thought David was taking The Wave too seriously. David thought Laurie wasn’t taking The Wave
seriously enough and broke off their relationship.
35. Laurie’s father told her he had heard on the golf course that there was some kind of rally at school today. A Jewish

36. Laurie went to watch the Saturday afternoon football game. Brad was letting people into the stands. He told
Laurie she couldn’t go up until she gave The Wave salute. Laurie refused. Brad said it was what The Wave had
decided. Laurie replied that it was ridiculous and insane and asked Brad if he was afraid of going against The Wave.
Brad replied that a lot of people had noticed that Laurie was not at The Wave rally the day before. So? So what?
Laurie demanded.
37. The Grapevine staff decided to write about the anonymous junior’s story and give a report on the new Jewish
boy who had been beaten up. There were other interviews with worried parents and concerned teachers. Laurie
wrote an editorial to condemn The Wave as a harmful organization, a dangerous and mindless movement that
suppressed freedom of speech and thought and ran against everything the country was founded on.
