20. Laurie started telling her parents about The Wave at dinner. Her mother said she didn’t like it, as it sounded too
military. Laurie disagreed and said it was just positive energy. Her father was in favor of anything that would make the
students pay attention. Laurie mentioned that even Robert Billings was taking part in the group. Her father pointed
out that America was built by people who were part of a group. Mrs. Saunders said that although she supported
cooperation, she was in favor of people acting as individuals. The popular thing was not always the right thing and she
thought it was dangerous to manipulate students. Mr. Saunders said he was convinced that Mr. Ross knew what he
was doing and Laurie agreed and added that The Wave was interesting and for the good of the class.

21. David and Laurie argued about The Wave. David believed it would improve the football team’s performance,

argued about Mrs. Saunders’ viewpoint that The Wave was brainwashing.
22. a. A membership card is an identification that members of an organization can show to prove their membership.
b. A membership card with a red X showed that the member was a monitor who had to report back to Mr. Ross
if any of the other members did not obey the rules of The Wave.
23. Laurie wasn’t pleased that she didn’t have a monitor membership card and asked Mr. Ross what the point of
the card was. Laurie had to repeat her question as she had forgotten to present it in the correct way. She did
not feel the same high energy and unity she had experienced on previous days, in fact she felt like something
creepy was going on.
24. Robert smiled when he was chosen to be a monitor and felt a new pride in himself, like being born again. He had
the courage to sit at the same table as the rest of The Wave at lunch.
