Meanwhile, for the Coopersmith Inventory Scale (CSEI)
(1967/1981), there are 58 items of self-report to measure the
self-esteem in global and the scoring will be like this:
Table 2.6. CSEI Scoring Formula
Men Women Self-esteem Level
32 32 Significantly below average
36 35 Somewhat below average
40 39 Average
44 43 Somewhat above average
47 46 Significantly above average
The test has a built-in "lie scale" to help determine if you
are trying too hard to appear to have high self-esteem. If you
answered "like me" to three or more of the items, retake the test
with an eye toward being more realistic in your responses: 1, 6,
13, 20, 27, 34, 41, 48. The lie scale itself constructed to determine
if the participants is taking the measure seriously or not (Dalgas-
Pelish, 2006: 120).
The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) contains
four subscales, each measuring a different aspect of self-esteem:
general self-esteem, social self-esteem, home and parents’ self-
esteem, and school or academic self- esteem.
