In order to replace your inappropriate, self-defeating feelings with pleasant
ones:

(a) Be aware that you are thinking about the unfair event ( ) and see that

you are creating negative ‘feelings ( ) by your thinking.
(b) Tell yourself that you-can stop thinking about this event and can think of

other Activating Events ( ’s) instead.
(c) Force yourself to think of a different Activating Event (such as your
friend’s at times treating you fairly).
(d) Frequently practice directly replacing your undesirable feelings with
more pleasant feelings by thinking of some desirable Activating Events.
Easing Techniques
Each technique teaches you some self-help methods, and shows you
different ways to measure your progress.
[ ] REDUCE INTENSITY: Change your intense inappropriate negative feelings
to milder feelings. For example, if you are feeling inappropriately enraged at a
friend’s unfairness, show yourself that it is not that unfair or that your friend
also treats you nicely at times. You can then make yourself feel less enraged.
If you are feeling unduly depressed about some loss, you can show yourself
that the loss is not entirely bad and can make yourself feel less depressed.
