VFW 1957 Officers. VFW Auxiliary Members About 1957. Oscar L. Joyner, Jr., for whom the
Names listed on page 96 Names listed on page 96 V. F. W. Post was named was killed
in Normandy in 1944.
Twelve men met in December 1945 to organize the
Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kernersville. The officers
were elected and applied for a charter. The charter
was granted January 7, 1946 with 28 members. The
Post now has a membership of 200. Mr. George Flynt
was the first commander. The Post was named in honor
of a fallen comrade, Oscar L. Joyner, Jr., Post 5352. In
1954 the V. F. W. purchased the land for their future
Post home.
The Ladies Auxiliary was organized with 32
members. Mrs. Jane Swayngim was elected their
first president. The Auxiliary works hand in hand with Kernersville Linoleum and Tile Co. started business in April of 1951
in a one car garage. At that time, this was the only firm in this community
the Post and assists them in many civic projects. They that installed floor covering, cabinet tops, wall tile and floor finishing. The
business is now located at 403 N. Main St. Owners are proud to have
sponsor little league teams, scouts, disabled veterans, served this community for the past 20 years. Pictured: Mr. and Mrs. Bill

and an orphanage home. They aid in cancer research.
The two oldest active members are Mrs. Carrie Cook
and Mr. Fred H. Morris.
In 1961 the Post and Auxiliary built ~ home on the
property purchased in 1954. At the end of 1970 the
Post Home debt was paid off under the leadership of
their present commander, Maurice McBride. The Aux-
iliary President is Mrs. Betty Nelson.
Berry Water Gardens, which was started as a hobby in 1936, has
prospered into one of the nation's largest wholesalers dealing in tropical fish,
goldfish, aquarium supplies and small animals. Truck delivery service ex-
tends into nine surrounding states. Warehouses in Kernersville, Jacksonville,
Fla., and Chattanooga total 100,000 sq. feet.
Darby Baking Co., Inc., had its grand opening on January 23, 1971.
Coal Berdette Keaton is the owner. Employees are Betty Smith, Linda
Winfree, Frances Wilson, Leroy Bell, Mary East, Susan Walker and
Aldine Searcy.
Carl E. Ballard started a small machine shop in 1945, known as
Allied Tool and Machine Company. Since then it has expanded to include,
in addition to the original, three more plants with a total of 200 employees
and ships to customers located throughout the eastern United States. They
are most appreciative to their many friends and customers who have made
it possible for them, in the past 25 years, to progress from a very small ALLIED TOOL & MACHINE CO., INC.
