SCENE 2: Dr. Pesky’s room at Bellevue
PESKY: Hum, hum, what’ll I do today? Well, I haven’t tried lifting
myself up by my own bootstraps for quite a long time. Maybe I’ve
gotten stronger since then. I think I’ll try again. Grr! Grr!
BARGELLO: (knocks and enters) Dr. Pesky?
PESKY: (falls over) Oof! I almost had it! Well, yes, that’s me, Dr.
Solomon Pesky. What can I do for you?
BARGELLO: They told me at the desk that this was a good time to
see you. I am the Great Bargello. You have heard of me, of course;
I’m very famous.
PESKY: Oh, yes. Aren’t you the one who invented the perpetual
motion machine? I am interested in buying one of those devices for
my laboratory.
BARGELLO: No, no, no! I am Bargello, the greatest explorer on
Earth! Old Ericson at the Explorer’s Club told me that you had a job
he couldn’t handle. Well, I’ll do it for you.
PESKY: You will? Oh, wonderful, wonderful! (falls over) Oh,
wonderful! (dances around and falls over)
BARGELLO: Now, give me all the details. I’m ready to start right
away. I’ll show that old man what a real explorer can do!
PESKY: All right, here is what you have to do: I want you to find the
Two Extremes.
BARGELLO: The Two Extremes? What are those? Lost cities?
Hidden lakes? Islands? Buried treasure?
PESKY: No, no, no! They are the biggest thing there is, and the
smallest thing there is. I need to know what they are for my research.
You must find them for me.
BARGELLO: Well, what am I supposed to do when I find one of
these Extremes?
