If a task is both urgent and important, then I move it to the top of the
list. If the matter is urgent (i.e. there is a material risk or detriment if it is
not done now) but is not important, I try to delegate it. If I can’t delegate
it, then I try to spend as little time as possible getting it done. If the task
is important but not urgent, then it’s next in line on the list. And if it is
neither urgent nor important, it moves down to the end of the list, or I
decide whether it needs to be done at all. New matters will of course
arise during the week, so the order of priorities may need to be re-
assessed as the week progress.
MANAGING THE WORKDAY
An example of my daily planner and timesheet is below. At the
beginning of each day, I check my priorities chart. Then I decide on the
2 or 3 top priorities and transfer these to my day planner. I try to limit
this to 2 or 3 tasks only so I have space in the day to respond to incoming
matters.
