Reason To Sing
My guts turn inside out. I am petrified. Who is this sinister
monster?
Thankfully, without any more words, he storms into the
bathroom and slams the door nearly off its hinges. I hear the
shower.
Come on Kelita, you can do this. Keep your head together, girl.
Get yourself dressed. Think now. Grab your coat and don’t forget
your purse. Hurry, time’s wasting, he’s going to be out of the shower
any minute.
I fly out of the apartment and, running like a wild animal
desperately fleeing its hunter, sprint for two blocks until
reaching the nearest payphone. I frantically duck into the
booth, catching my breath in giant gulps while rifling through
my purse for loose change. Please, please let there be a quarter!
That simple treasure finds its way into my fingers and I
drop it into the phone. I dial the number, panic filling my head
and heart. I hear the ringing. I feel like I might faint. What if
he’s not there?
Oh, please God, please pick up. Please, please pick up!
