Chapter Thirty-Nine
I can catch my breath, he’s back in the doorway holding the
Nashville Yellow Pages.
“Find yourself somewhere else to sleep!” He yells, “GET
OUT!” with so much hostility, when he hurls the book at me
it catapults through the window, smashing it to bits. Glass flies
everywhere.
Still, his rampage continues. He is even more irate. He
turns and stomps down the hall, bellowing, “I’m phoning your
boyfriend. Right now!”
“What? What do you mean you’re phoning my boyfriend?”
I call out after him, suddenly scared to death.
“Just what you think it means! I’m calling Gord. He needs
to know what you’ve been up to.”
“No, no he doesn’t! Don’t be ridiculous! Leave him out of
it.” I continue to cower in the bedroom. I can hear him dialing
the phone. “Hudson, are you crazy? Don’t you dare.” I am
screaming. “HUDSON, DON’T YOU DARE!”
It’s very late and even later in Toronto but I can tell someone
has picked up the phone.
Hudson grumbles in his condescending tone, “Gord ... I
just want to let you know Kelita’s been fucking me while she’s
been here. Just thought you might want to know that.” He
slams down the phone.
I feel like I am going to throw up. I’m a total mess. All the
electricity and excitement of the night has just been sucked
right out of me.
Hudson has obviously gleaned some warped degree of
satisfaction from his phone call to Gord. He cools down and
leaves me be. I hear his bedroom door close. There’s nothing
more to be said between us. At least not tonight. Once again,
my husband has shown his true colours. If he can’t have me, he
will make damn sure no one else will want me either.
