e are all aware of the negative effects that data
breaches can have on organizations, ranging
Wfrom regulatory fines, reputational damage,
and share price declines to the costs of investigating
and compensating victims. You must have wondered at
some point how these breaches affect individuals and
why we should be concerned.

The most important reason for safeguarding our devices
and Internet accounts is to protect our personal and
financial identities. Phishing scams, which trick people
into disclosing personal information, are becoming more
common, and the more information we have publicly
available on the Internet or social media, the more likely
we are to fall victim to one of these scams.

As a defense for less sensitive information, some people
find it easier to think, “I have nothing to hide, so it doesn’t
matter.” But, in reality, everyone has something to hide,
whether it’s how much money we made last year or how
many episodes of our favorite TV show we’ve seen.
